This week I decided to try some pet portraits – I’m an animal lover with a dog, Dougal the crazy Spinger Spaniel and three cats, so it wasn’t too difficult to find subject matter!
I thought I’d try three very different approaches, using different photographic techniques and different KOWA MFT lenses. From a standard portrait shot in an outdoor location to more quirky portraits using the Kowa 8.5mm super-wide angle lens.
The hardest part of the task was getting Dougal to sit still, long enough for me to take a shot I was happy with. In fact the final image from below was Dougal showing his frustration having to remain static for more than 30 seconds!
Here is a selection of images:

Using the Kowa 25mm at various apertures, I experimented as I wanted to keep enough detail in the background to
set the outdoor scene – but still have the main focal point on Dougal who was very patient during he photo shoot!

Using the Kowa 25mm lens at F1.8 and focusing on Simba’s eyes, creates a lovely soft background whilst emphasising
fine detail on the subjects head. Photoshop was used to further enhance the final image.

A more quirky pet portrait this time is created here by getting very close to Dougal as he barks –
but using the super wide angle Kowa 8.5mm lens. Photoshop and a tight crop was used to enhance the image.
